This was not exactly unexpected, I've been banging on about exactly this since 2022 when it became obvious that Canonical intends to drag linux into a snap walled garden one way or another. By 26.04 they will have made it impossible to install deb files at all because of changes they have made to "enhance the user experience". They are just Microsoft in different clothes.

I installed Ubuntu 24.04 in a virtual machine. The install was straight forward and hassle free. The system ran well. I just fired it up from time to time to play and it worked just fine, doing what I expected from an OS. Then this morning I fired it up and decided to check the App Store to see if there were any updates. There is always a few things that get updates, to fix bugs that invariably sneak into the first release. Well, big bug encounter, the App Store, will not launch. Did not dig into what the problem might be, but as it stands no updates for me I guess.
