VLC

Post by wove »

For years I ignored VLC, not because it worked poorly, but because I saw it as having a cumbersome and arcane UI. I always had it around because it did work with everything and software like Handbrake required it be installed. Like my distain for Evolution that has past and I find myself moving to using VLC for all my multimedia needs. It really does work exceptionally well and it runs on everything from Haiku to BSD.

I find VLC very useful mainly for the command line invocations. This way I can get a web and/or telnet interface to the server. E.g. I use
/usr/bin/vlc --config=/home/chris1/internetradio/vlcrc.pulse --no-video --no-media-library --daemon --pidfile=/var/lock/vlc-music.pid --playlist-autostart --play-and-exit --intf=http --http-password=testing --http-port=8080 --file-logging --logfile=/var/log/vlc/messages.log --logmode=text --log-verbose=1 /media/Music/Compilations/Golden Hit Parade
which plays the contents of the directory given and a web page on http://servername:8080 which lists all the tracks found so that I can then select/change the track playing if necessary.

A fellow on a different forum from Australia pointed me to this radio stream. <http://stream.whrwfm.org/stream.ogg>

Their description says, "Harpur Radio Workshop, hereafter known as WHRW, is a free-format, educational, and community radio station located on the campus of Binghamton University." They play a very diverse collection of music and if you get bored listening to the same old, same old this is a station to listen to. Yesterday morning I woke to Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain" and this morning I woke to the Beatles "Eleanor Rigby".

I can listen to an ogg stream which I can listen to with about any Linux music player, but I could not listen to it when I was playing around on my 20 year old Mac OS machine. I looked at VLC and the current version of VLC does install and work just fine on 20 year old hardware running a 15 year old OS. And it seemed to make sense to just make VLC my universal media player.

Too much distortion, variable volume (here in the UK) with my standard presets (see previous).
My to-go radio station is https://listen-boomradio.sharp-stream.c ... o_live_128 (or sometimes https://listen-boomradio.sharp-stream.c ... 160_aac_lc ). UK orientated though.
Schedules at https://www.boomradiouk.com/progs1/boom-radio/ and https://www.boomradiouk.com/progs1/boom-rock/

Chris, I am going to have to figure out what to do with your configuration. Is that a text file added to a directory or just an entry from the command line? I have not looked at all into configuring VLC.

I did add the URLs for your stream which reported that they could not be opened. I went to the station site and got the stream urls there. They seemed valid, but pressing start did not produce any sound. I have ran into stations that are blocked for whatever reason and have passed URLs onto others which they report as being blocked (probably either political or some DRM nonsense).

Hi Wove,
The command line I gave earlier is run in the background on a Raspberry Pi (X not started).
Having said that, I plugged the URL into desktop VLC on Windows and it played properly. Did you open it as a Network stream (Ctrl-N)?
I've heard comments from listeners from Canada, Australia, New Zealand so there doesn't seem to be a geofence.
The config file I use on the PI command line is attached, zipped.

Thanks Chris,

I downloaded that attachment. I have not looked it over yet or moved it to its place. The last couple days have been busier than I like, but soon I will concentrate on it.

I did not know that uploading files with a post was possible. I do not have anything to upload, but this site keeps surprising me with all the things it can do.

Well Chris I got the streams up and running in Amrok on the Trinty DE, so geofencing is not the root of the problem I am having in VLC. have not yet installed VLC on this setup, but will give it a go in a bit.

I was listening to the stream I had posted for a bit and decided to give the streams you mentioned, Chris, a try. I copied the url and pasted into VLC and poof a couple seconds later it began playing. I have no clue why I was having troubles earlier, but VLC is working fine now with your stations. I probably copied it wrong or ended up sticking a space in where it did not belong. I make a lot of silly mistakes.

When it first opened a DJ was talking and I swear it sounded like Judy Dench, maybe that is a UK DJ requirement :) It is pop music, which is not a favorite of mine, but I enjoyed the mix played. Eleanor Rigby was the second or third song played and I do really like Eleanor Rigby.

I added your station to my list of streams I keep in Zim on my NextCloud, so it will be available where ever I land.
