It is a good feeling to make something that does not work right and bring it back to usefulness. I enjoy using a tablet. There are clearly times that a built in keyboard is nice, but for reading, surfing, solitaire, shows, etc. a tablet is a nice convenient device to work with. I find with a stylus a tablet is wonderful for writing and drawing as well.
I sketched out my summer projects on a tablet, wrote out my material lists, took pictures of the area I was working on. I took the tablet to the material suppliers to order materials and during construction the tablet with the drawings and notes was propped up onsite to provide a handy reference.
Nice to hear you got your quasi functional device useful with the help of a Linux install.
