The modern state of GalliumOS

Post by tlmiller »

So Arch linux doesn't work with the audio on the Chromebook 13, so I went ahead and installed GalliumOS, knowing it would work. Then added neon repos and neon-ified Gallium OS, removing XFCE and LXDE.

Works AMAZINGLY well so far. everything worked out of the box. The touchpad at first seemed to track badly, but that seems to have went away. The keyboard is pretty good, doubly so for how freaking skinny this thing is. LCD is, of course, the high point for this thing. Wow, gorgeous. Works with the USB-C dock.

If anyone wanted to try linux on their secondary Chromebook, definitely worth a look.

My Acer Chromebook14 is super thin never heats up even its on my lap for hours and the touchpad is excellent even though I hate touchpads. Good to know about Gallium working as I may give that a try. Im pretty happy with ChromeOS and presently running Windows/Android/Linux apps.

Your Acer is Braswell, yes? I think the hardware might work better on that than on the SkyLake with mainline linux kernels. So you could probably run a standard OS such as Neon. Not 100% on that.

I also got instructions to get audio working on mainline OS's. Haven't tried it. Probably won't until Neon moves to 20.04, since until then Gallium + Neon is every bit as good (to me) as Arch.

Might redo the 3500 with Arch though...
