FreeBSD 14

Post by wove »

FreeBSD 14 was released on the 11/20/23. <https://www.freebsd.org>

As with most BSD releases it is so incremental, it is hard to see any changes unless you really dig. FreeBSD does update its repositories every 3 months, so software does routinely get updated, however it still often lags behind the most recent. Gnome suffers most from this. Plasma, XFCE and Mate are generally the latest.

BSD only uses X11, but they do include X11 on Wayland. Since they use a different license than Linux, BSD includes proprietary drivers, so Nvidia drivers are the latest from Nvidia. Linux uses the shims created by BSD for proprietary wifi drivers, so typically they are all supported. BSD is very rigorous in network testing, so including drivers for the latest standards can be slow to arrive in BSD.

I havent tried any version of BSD in quite some time. Might be an interesting thing to test.
