Re: My top 5 distros for February 2019
As usual, my personal choices are rather boring and not changing very much:
1. Debian
2. KDE Neon
3. Arch
4. ROSA
5. Fedora

Im impressed youre using an Ubuntu based distro given your distaste for it.
I surprised even myself with how much Ive enjoyed LM 19.1 with my laptops/dock. Without the dock the list would look far different, but the reality is some distros dont cut it and others work amazingly well with my setup.

Yeah, I initially had aprehension about that, but Neon is just a REALLY nice OS. I like having the latest and greatest KDE without some of the headaches that occasionally accompany running Arch.

Have either of you tried Void Linux with the MATE desktop?
It's a "different" distro in that it's not based on anything else (seemingly); runit not systemd.
I find it quite fast to load, and quite complete.
Also exists for Raspberry Pi - but no MATE (yet) - installs to a command line.

You are correct in that it's totally independent.
Also, one of the things that some people find useful is that it has MUSL version for increased speed.
It's one of the distro's I watch, although don't use regularly due to it's KDE implementation being...poor.

Re: My top 5 distros for February 2019
I've been really wanting to try some of the distros you guys talk about on here, but I got just 2 main computers( 1 shop,1 in my home) that are running MX-18. I didn't want to upset the boat trying something that doesn't work. I recently acquired 2 computers from a friend that owns apartment buildings. He found 2 that were left behind in one of the apartments. They both work, but I don't know what's on them. I need to see if I can even get them functional, then try to install different OS's on them. Stay tuned...more to come.

Re: My top 5 distros for February 2019
Just use livemedia Capt and you can try them on your present systems. I always try them first then install for testing.
In regards to Void Linux I havent tried it but Mate is a no go as it doesnt work with my Dell docking station. KDE isnt a sure thing either depending on the distro involved but Gnome 3 and KDE based distros have the best chance so far.
Ive tried a number of Mate distros, OpenSUSE, Fedora, Ubuntu and Linux Mint and none of them work with my dock. I could run them on my other desktops but for now Im more interested to see what works with my personal system.
My testing focus though is on distros for everyday users, many times lacking in experience.

And that is essentially the polar opposite of Void Linux.crosscourt wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 4:28 pm My testing focus though is on distros for everyday users, many times lacking in experience.
