It was 2006 and my first Linux distro was Xandros, a very Windows like OS that was very popular back then.

I remember Xandros. I used it for a while, it never really piqued my interest overly due to it being VERY similar to Debian, and not adding anything to the Debian repos that weren't already there, but I thought it was a decent enough distro.

It had excellent compatibility with NTFS as well as some other good crossover features, so it was useful if you were still using Windows as well.
I bought Xandros at a Babbages store on a recommendation from a friend and having read a review, Excellent experience and it was the first time I envisioned not using Windows for the first time.
It lead me to Mandriva, then Mepis and PCLinuxOS, all very popular back then.
