My top 5 distros April 2020

Post by crosscourt »

My choices are based on my needs, experience and hardware, youre mileage may vary.

1. Feren OS KDE
2.Q4OS Centaurus KDE 3.10
3.Q4OS Quark 20.04 KDE testing
4.KDE Neon
5.Zorin OS 15.2 Core

This is the first time Ive listed a testing version as a recommended distro as Quark is based on the upcoming Kubuntu 20.04 releasing April 23, 2020.

Neon is the first Ubuntu based distro to ever manage to impress me.

I was originally a RPM guy but spent a lot of time with Ubuntu distros.

I've always been a deb guy. The first distro to EVER get online with was LibraNet, which was specifically designed to make installing Debian (at the time 2.1?, 2.2) easy to install and use. After LibraNet closed shop, I bounced around a bit, but eventually just stayed with the distro it was based on since they had made installation so much easier. And to this day, I haven't found a distro that suits me better (although at times Arch comes close).

Mepis was the only Debian based distro I ever stuck with for awhile. I was a Mandriva guy for a long time.

Xandros was my firstm Linux distro and it was amazing to use and had excellent NTFS compatibility. This was a period of time where you could buy Linux distros min stores, in my case it was Babbages and form the price support was excellent. I was using it into the early 2000s then moved moved over to Mandriva.

Given how much I like Kubuntu 20.04/Q4OS Quark Centaurus 3.10 is probably history on my next list.

I don't know if I could ever try Kubuntu again. I've never had good luck with it at first release. It's always just been buggy and unstable. Part of the reason I originally switched to Neon, was because I was tired of having a Windows-like experience with Kubuntu... Mind you, I never used anything but the LTS versions, so 18.04, 16.04, 14.04...
