Arch 2021.04.01 released

Post by tlmiller »

Normally, wouldn't be very interesting, but this media now includes an INSTALLER!! It's not a very flexible installer. And it's not really all that incredibly powerful. But, it's a START.

More here

I've tested it on a couple VM's. Seems to work only with EFI installs. Lots of other limitations on the installation though. Still doesn't impress me compared to EndeavourOS. But like I said before, at least it's a start.

What made them go to an installer?

They've always said they intended to re-introduce an installer (Arch HAD an installer from 2002-~2006), it was just a very low priority for their devs. Some people think they're actively trying to curb some of the smugness and arrogance that's so prevalent amongst the Arch community since it is so much more work to set up, and start making it a little more friendly and welcoming to beginners. Others think one of the devs just got bored. Most likely the truth is somewhere in between, but it IS an officially supported Arch installer.

Just another reason why I dislike Arch, among many. Their forums are simply the worst Ive ever experienced.

Oh, no argument from me on that. The very definition of toxic environment.

I have never looked at the Arch forums. The thing that has always attracted me to Arch is their excellent documention. So many times even looking for solutions on a different distro, the Arch Wiki has had the answers I needed. So in that regard I have always though of Arch as probably the best supported distro out there.

Yes, the Arch wiki is FANTASTIC, far better than any other distro's wiki that has one publicly accessible.

Theres a lot of good documentation online with various distros. MX Linux is one of the best Ive ever encountered.
