The new news and interests tab in taskbar apparently is causing some issues with other icons running together or not being there at all. Ive had news and interests enabled with no issues at all, but I typically turn it off.

A lot more updating than I had originally expected with the June update to 21H1 which so far is running much better than its predecessor. Once I got my drivers updated using an updater app, performance has improved.

If you havent updated to 21H1 you wont get a choice as they are moving to auto update status. You might want to do it before that happens so you can choose when it happens.

They want everyone to be ready to get the Windows 11 upgrades that they didn't ask for via GW11, so that it can cause all kinds of crashes and other issues. :D

Win11 is a long way off for most but the security fixes incorporated in 21H1 really are a necessity. The recent update cleaned up some performance issues for me as well.

OMG Ubuntu site had some info on Windows 11, noting that new system requirements would block many machines from updating to Windows 11. The site provided a link to Microsoft's app to check compatibility with your system.

And according to the Microsoft's compatibility checker, my 4 month old fairly expensive Surface will not run Windows 11.

The system requirements for Win11 arent bad at all so Im surprised your Surface had an issue. Theres nothing in the system requirements that most systems cant handle. DX12 compatible not an issue as most graphics now are compatible even though they may not support all DX12 features. UEFI and secure boot capable, 64gb storage, 4gb of ram and a 1ghz cpu.
They are forcing users though to have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled which for me is a bit of an issue. Most pcs/laptops in the last 6 years should be able to run Win11.
My Dell 7470 laptop is compatible except I have Secure Boot turned off.

It may well be a case of the right hand not being aware of what the left hand is doing. Later visiting the Microsoft store I found that my Surface is still for sale, still the same price with a yellow banner across it saying "Free Upgrade to Windows 11 when released". I guess time will tell. Certainly the unit falls within the requirements.

I suspect the big requirement that many machines will not pass is the need for TPM 2.0. I know that will block my Thinkpad X240 which only has TPM 1.2. The spec for TPM 2 was released in Q2 of 2019, so we are talking about lots of machines not making the grade.
