Pretty much. Given that the language used is well beyond your control, if you're just and end user, keeping up with patches is all you can do.

The hardware errors(Intel cpu). are a big issue that in many cases have to be fixed thru hardware changes. Patches dont always solve the issues and many times create new problems and performance issues

Patches for the software issues is pretty much all an end user can do as tlmiller pointed out.
