You can also use unetbootin which is available thru Synaptic or other package managers. Rufus is also simple and easy to use.

I wouldn't use unetbootin, have heard sooo many stories of issues due to it using it's own bootloader, I always use Rufus in Windows and cli (dd or cp) in Linux

Agreed on all counts. I've had lots of issues with unetbootin not working in the past, although I haven't used it in close to 3 or 4 years. Rufus in Windows and dd in linux.

I have to say I too haven't used unetbootin in a while, but as my current methods haven't failed me I see no reason to change.

unetbootin is easy to use and not an issue and is default in many distros. There are many choices though but Id take a look at unetbootin Dai its preety good. Many distros have their own versions of apps like Ubuntu.

Youre an experienced user youve got your own favs. Im talking about an app thats easy to use and commonplace in many well known distros.
Its a good choice for people with less experience and its used with MX Linux 17 a Debian based distro.

We need to look at things from that perspective and evaluate how we want to present advice and guides to beginners.

Ive used so many distros my experience is more varied but not as specific or in depth as yours.

I've heard Etcher is another good choice and is available for Mac Windows AND Linux, so could be a good contender for a newbie offering, they could use the same app on either platform.

If you read the story link above he recommends Etcher just for that reason. Gary really believes in trying to present things for the beginner in the best way possible.
