OwnCloud or NextCloud

Post by wove »

I have been thinking about setting up an OwnCloud/NextCloud server using either my Raspberry Pi or the Pinebook Pro. I have been reading up on both OwnCloud and NextCloud and I am having trouble telling the difference between them and why one might choose one over the other. If anyone has insights into this I would appreciate some pointers.

The Pinebook Pro has very poor power management, which I understand is largely a hardware/firmware problem, so since it does not sleep anyway and uses <15watts it might make a good canditate. It boots from emmc and has an NVME adaptor to install a larger storage drive. Downside of course is that it is something of a waste of a laptop.

Raspberry Pies are inexpensive with lots of support. Images for both OwnCloud and NextCloud are readily available, however a Pi would need an external hard drive for storage. But both the Raspberry Pi and the Pinebook Pro would be easily suited to the task.

If anyone is familiar with OwnCloud or NextCloud I would appreciate any insights you might have.

thanks
