I used to use XBMC, and continued to use it for a little while after they changed their name to Kodi, but then they broke the ability to play local DVD's and I gave up on it. While it's probably been fixed for YEARS now...I simply never went back to it.

Back 2005-2010 Windows Media Center, Mac's Front Row and XBMC were decent additions to desktop computers with nice screens. Window's and Mac gave up on their offerings and XBMC moved to being a regular distribution. I never used it as a distribution, but I did install and use it on my desktop. I am not sure when I stopped using it, but it has been a long time. Now my desktop monitor is a smart TV, and the family TV is hooked up to Apple TV and there is no real reason for me to use such software.
