I may throw it on my E7450 to try. That's quite literally my test system (Debian 10)...

Well, it's pretty slow to update the cache, but it doesn't negatively affect performance while it does it. Will say, the searches that I tried are pretty good results. Such as, searched for a kde-centric hex editor (since I already knew what I wanted to see as the result):
vs.
Several other searches had pretty much the same results.
Code: Select all
root@wildmage:~# apt search hex editor kde

So you would recommend it? Too soon to tell?

Re: axi-cache: a new search tool for Debian packages
Based on 1/2 dozen searches, definitely. It doesn't seem to at this point impose any real performance penalty, it just requires 2-3x the time to update cache (apt update vs. update-apt-xapian-index), and obviously I haven't had any long term experience to see if possibly the index eventually causes a performance penalty, but at first blush, definitely has significantly better results than apt, and MASSIVELY more relevant results than apt-cache. Now, someone who's been using Debian for a long time and really knows how to manipulate apt to get the results they want, might not be useful for, but for beginners who for whatever reason aren't using a gui (good on them) for package management, this is as good as any gui package managers searches ever are that I've seen. And even for advanced users, it's much EASIER to get good, relevant results than it is through the base tools.

Thats what I was thinking as this site grows and we need to specialize a bit more. My background is gaming, graphics apis, video hardware and drivers.
