So sold off a bunch of old stuff, selling one of my laptops (the Acer), so I decided to get the Dell Inspiron 7375. Why that laptop? AMD Ryzen-5 2500u!! And of course a 1080P 13.3" LCD.

Got a Best Buy open box special about $200 off normal price, so I ordered an additional 8 GB ram ($60) to bring it up to 16 GB, and ordered a 1 TB 850 EVO SSD ($180) to upgrade it from the 256 SSD that came with it. So in the end double the ram and 4x the storage capacity with a better performance SSD as well (it doesn't support NVME drives) for about the same price as a still sealed box version.

SUPER pumped to try out the mobile Ryzen!!! Everything should be here by the end of next week.

I've been wanting to try out that ryzen mobile since it was announced. So when I saw the open box special on a 13.3" FHD, I couldn't resist trying to sell enough to get it.

Me too!! I'm very excited to have 2 modern laptops. This will actually be the first time in many years (since the release of Broadwell) that I'll have 2 laptops with current generation hardware.

I'm going to assume there won't be a push for more and more cores in the mobile space, so I don't plan on upgrading either of these for several years, and just continuing to use what I have. POSSIBLY upgrade my Haswell here in another year or 2 when Ryzen 4000/Ryzen-3 or 10th generation Core processors are released, but I have every intention of completely skipping the 9th generation Core and the Ryzen 3000 series/Ryzen-2.

Desktop I might upgrade my processor since it's possible still when Ryzen 3000/Ryzen-2 comes out. AMD has promised that for 5 years they won't abandoned the AM4 socket, and all motherboards will be able to get a firmware update to support newer processors (up to OEM's to release said firmware however). Dell definitely did release firmware supporting the Ryzen 2000 series processors, hopefully they'll do the same when Ryzen-2 is released.

I wont be seeing any recent hardware anytime soon. Dont really need it but simply dont have the cash, so spending more time learning how to use cheap older hardware to meet my needs. Its a learning experience to prepare for retirement.

I'm still a few years away from that, so have a few more years of trying to keep up with technology.

Ive always been behind the curve ieven in my prime gaming days but did just fine. The quality of cheap older hardware now just amazes me and given I like to use older apps and retrogame , along with Linux, Ill do just fine. Im 65 this year and will retire somewhere between 66-70 so have to get smart in a hurry.
