Latitude E6420 test

Post by tlmiller »

So, I was reading online about the "mini mylar" connector on the E6420/E6430 (and possibly others) that is actually a 25mm mSATA connection. Wasn't able to determine if this is true or not (although it's definitely a 25mm tall with a mini-pci connector, so it very well could be). So to test since obviously I have access to a functional E6420, I bought a 25mm 64 GB SSD and I'm going to see if it actually is. IF it works, kinda will be neat, will have a 64 GB SSD w/ 500 GB SSHD on the E6420 at work, while still having an optical drive.

Now, other than being neat, I will have no use for it given that it's 2 years out of warranty and is just setting around waiting to be recycled (although I do use it for meetings while it continues working).

Its the same connector used with the Dell D430 that use the older SSD drives I believe but in your case I believe its true.

The connector does not apparently have a SATA connection, so it doesn't work. Tried it on the E6420 and my own E5430. Not recognized in the BIOS, or in the OS's (Debian tested on both, Fedora on my E5430).

Found article saying it WILL work on the WWAN port of the E5440, I THINK I have one of those at work, so if so, if it's not a 1366x768 I'm going to swap the E6420 for the E5440 and run it with the mSATA SSD + HDD.

It does indeed work on the E5440. It's 1366x768 so I'm unwilling to deal with using it though. For my testing to see how much automation we can do for adding linux clients (DevOps is moving to linux desktops as the software stack we use is designed for linux) to the domain, I'm going to use a mSATA to 2.5" SATA adapter and use the E6420 (I want an SSD to do my testing on). I'll put the HDD back in when I'm finished and no longer need it for testing...if that ever happens.

Surprisingly the testing for integrating linux into the AD Domain went rather well. I still need to do further testing as trying to get everything working I may have broke things on my test machine (I could log into the gui, noone else could, but they could log into CLI). I need to redo the tests to see if it was my error or a limitation of the software I'm using. Forgot my installation USB's Friday so wasn't able to test then, will need to remember them Monday to do further testing.
