for me the best distro I've ever used and what I'd recommend are totally different. I recommend Mint because it's good performance, and easy to use. But for me personally, Debian and Arch are by far my #1 & #2.

Id recommend MX Linux 17 both for me and to others, its that good, and very newbie friendly, but includes many tools for more experienced users.

Agree that Mint is an excellent choice for most users but I tend to show people the distros and let them decide.

Not to get too far off topic in this thread about the KDE Slimbook, but Im a pretty average Linux user, as Im no expert, but have a huge amount of experience with distros over the years, probably in the hundreds. I prefer ease of use, clean, easy to install and update and lean toward anything that helps productivity but love to see some polish as well. Im not opposed to CLI but in this day and age for most users, I want to see things done in GUI as much as possible. Most users are looking for a smooth experience and coming from Windows there are expectations which if fed could lead to Linux being adopted by many more people.
My recommendations are based on my testing and user experience, so being a middle of the road guy(Windows 7 user), that means most people will enjoy distros that i like in many cases.
