Around 2000 the PC industry was in a big race to the bottom. It was a close race there between HP and Dell, and I seem to recall that Dell got there first. I think Dell was bought and bought again and is not the same Dell it once was. Being old irascible and stuck in my ways I tend to say the nice thing about Dells and HPs is you can run over them with a truck and it won't effect their performance. :)

My first Dell laptop was the D430 which I loved then I went to the E6400 but didnt own anything Dell back the period your discussing wove. My experience with HP hasnt been good and I also owned a couple of IBM Thinkpads from back in 2005, plus an Acer laptop. Acer laptop we got after the fire and it lasted 6 years, really nice.
Today I prefer Dell for a variety of reasons, and Im a bit biased since I worked for them for awhile.

My first Dell laptop was a C600, also had a C610 and a C630 (not sure if there even WAS a C620, but I've never had one). The C610 was by far the best of them. Had a SUPER high res screen (1400x1050 or similar) for the time, I wanna say it was maxed on ram, and had a 1.something GHz PIII. Man, it was such a nice laptop. I ended up getting rid of my C630 (which was the "normal 1024x768 panel) and keeping the C610.

7370 was delivered today and it was in great condition, just some minor scratches. Its the alloy version not the rubber feel version. It had Win10 1809 installed so Im sitting here, installing 20H2 which has been stuck on 97% for quite awhile but at least its updating. Lighted keyboard, beautiful display and the keyboard and trackpad feel great.

Finally got Win10 installed as upgrading from 1809 was a no go. System is running great and Im looking forward to setting up the new SSD when it comes and adding more ram to 16gb.

My mistake as the 7370 has 8gb of soldered memory, so no adding or upgrading with this laptop, versus the 7470 which has two slots so can upgrade easily. SSD is the only upgradeable item with the 7370.

Yeah, the x350 they went to that in the 13" latitudes. Main reason I avoided them.

ODD fact, the e7270 or e5270, despite being an even SMALLER screen (12.5"), has 2 slots. So they were able to put 2 slots into a smaller laptop but didn't in the 13"...

Its not a huge deal as the 7370 Ill be using at work some and my wife may be using it. 8gb should be plenty but it was something that I quite frankly misread about and much prefer the 13.3" screen . Ive never had a ram failure with any laptop Ive ever owned. 7470 is my workhorse laptop and has everything I need. Ill get more familiar with product lines over time.

Whats interesting is I got the 7370 for $215plus the cost of a SSD and a charger. The 7270s are expensive as most are $285 or more as is on Ebay.
