I always thought it was the BIOS, but no amount of flashing and reflashing with genuine Lenovo BIOS and 3rd party BIOS corrected the problem. I found very few references to the problem online, but the few I did find all said the solution was a new motherboard. And it seems that indeed the new (to me) motherboard has corrected the problem.
My eyes are just barely good enough to disassemble and reassemble the laptop, my days of doing component level repair are behind me. It is a shame too, I always found that sort of work fun.

Glad the mobo did the trick as many times problems such as this are bios related and never get corrected by the OEM.
