Re: Top 5 distros August 2020

I see youre using LXDE. I still like LXDE but really havent used it much since I went primarily to KDE. Yeah, I have tried going to Plasma off and on over the years but I just do not 'get' it. Some bits are good, but as I use 90% GTK apps and a few Qt5 I find I spend too much effort just trying to ...

Re: SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional

My first real use of Linux was kicked off in 1998/9 with a magazine cover CD of SUSE 5.8

It was interesting. I also bought the full box set of 6.0 - why I'll never know as it was a real PITA!!

Re: LibreOffice 7 has released

I must admit that LO 7 is the first version I've thought actually looks like it might have had some sort of thought behind the UI.

That of course excludes the old days of StarOffice - going back to the Staroffice 3 DOS version in the mid 90's :)

Re: Find and delete lines in .desktop files

Thanks for that chris - a useful extra tweak. Well, I ran the cleanup and certainly things do feel a bit snappier - especially Konqueror. It may be a placebo effect of course!! But, it still results in a much cleaner system and that I like. I did try to find a way to make the script recursive, but c...

Re: Find and delete lines in .desktop files

Good thinking. :) I was puzzled by the use of grep but a bit more digging with a relevant example makes it a lot clearer. Thanks again for assisting my little grey cell! If anyone is reading this and wondering what I'm on about - please see the before and after attached. 221 lines down to 25 lines t...

Re: Find and delete lines in .desktop files

grep -v '.*\[.*\]=' textmaker-free18.desktop [/size] will print ONLY lines NOT containing: Something[something]= from the file textmaker-free18.desktop Note the \ escaping [ and ], and .* for any-length string Excellent - find what you're not looking for! No wonder I struggle with this stuff!...

Find and delete lines in .desktop files

.desktop files contain loads and loads of lines that are not needed. e.g:- GenericName[es]=Navegador web Comment[ca]=Accedeix a Internet Name[fr]=Nouvelle fenêtre ad nauseam - take a look at the google-chrome.desktop attached and you'll see what I mean. I don't need any of these language entries and...

Re: Is anyone having issues with the Grub 2 patch?

Nice to see you bin. You were running Q4OS as your OS? Hi crosscourt - thanks, you too. No, this was on SparkyLinux - a couple of other users on there reported similar problem with what sounded like normal upgrades. It was also the subject of discussion on a couple of Debian Bug forums so it was no...
