Re: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will get 12 years of updates

Ubuntu was hoping to have their "immutable system" ready to go for the released of 24.04, but from what I read that is being pushed back until summer. It is to be entirely Snap based, which I am sure will irritate many folks. But that could have a very (nice?) long term impact on Ubuntu de...

Re: The weather has been crazy

We have been running 30ºF above normal. A couple days back I was sitting on the porch on a sunny afternoon wearing a flannel shirt, reading a book with a cup of coffee. It has been raining all day today. Just nonsense weather for February in Minnesota. Everyday we are breaking one record or another....

Re: What hardware are you using?

The 7010 is about the same specs as my Thinkpad X230t. The 230 is a laptop/tablet with a mobile processor and chip set, so it is most likely a bit slower. The X230t is my knock about machine. It goes to the shop, sits on the bench. It hold lots of documentation and directions. With the touch screen ...

Re: CPU temperatures

I was surprised that a question of the expected temperatures of C2D processors would generate so much discussion. I took a side trip to YouTube and it appears that “thermal paste” sort of occupies its own sub-genre. I do like YouTube, but a large portion of the videos on most topics are opinion piec...

Re: My older hardware seems to outlast my newer systems

One of the problems with the higher clock speeds and the microbial soldering used on newer systems is the higher frequency will cause stress fractures in the solder resulting in bad connections. This is ultimately a problem of design in the either the soldering is not properly done in the factory or...

Re: My older hardware seems to outlast my newer systems

I am in a phase of using older hardware. Most of what I am enjoying is using software that has served me well for years and has either become abandon or needs updates. I have always been something of a sucker for the odd hardware that never seems to catch on or stick around for long. I like the rota...

Raspberry Pi OS on the Surface RT

The Surface RT was the first high quality tablet I purchased. It was a very nice device and I am probably one of only three people in the world that liked it. Microsoft very ignominiously dumped it and support for it. As a last in your face move their final security update, closed off the boot loade...

Re: CPU temperatures

Thanks for all the solid advice. Changing thermal paste is something I usually do and would have probably done to this 2006 laptop, but of course I was out of thermal paste. I have ordered some and when it arrives I will clean out the old stuff and replace it. The laptop is the top of the line 17&qu...

CPU temperatures

I think my oldest laptop maybe needs some new thermal paste. It is a Core2Duo. The temperature gauge I downloaded puts its temperature at 162ºF (72ºC) at idle after running for a half hour. The other internal temperatures for GPU, RAM, and memory controller are similar. All of those have heat sinks ...

Re: RSS Feed stopped working

Please ignore prior post. It turns out that something in the protocol must have changed and the problem appears to be with my feed reader or my system. I grabbed a different feed reader and it is working fine with the sites feed URL. I am always dismayed when my old favorite software quits doing wha...
