Re: When did the UK go metric?

It's not so much a process of conversion as gradual slide. For example our road distances are in miles, but the BBC have decided that for broadcast purposes we use metres/kilometres as well. We buy fuel in litres but still use mpg (miles per gallon) as a measure of fuel efficiency - well lets face i...

Re: Wubuntu Windows Ubuntu OS

With October 25 looming I can see that they're possibly trying to tap in to the potentially huge market of folks who would like to get off the M$ adver-go-round and keep using their perfectly good hardware for a few more years. I would not be surprised to see other attempts in the coming months. Tro...

Re: Wubuntu Windows Ubuntu OS

Well, I had a look and it was quite an experience. Had a look at the Cinnamon/W10 version as these days I'm running Mint LMDE6. To my mind Wubuntu is a waste of time, energy and effort. Oh and the font rendering sucks big time. That may be because the fonts are not actually defined....but it was not...

Re: The weather has been crazy

I would not like that at all. If we go two days without sun, I turn into one crabby, cranky old man. Well maybe that should be crabbier and crankier old man. This morning we have ground fog. Standing outside looking up I can see the stars, yet I cannot see the house across the street. That should b...

Don't worry - once ESR gets to the 12x range you'll never notice the difference .... :o :o :o

Re: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will get 12 years of updates

Of course, the price of 12 years updates is that you have to sign up for Ubuntu Pro. Of course (right now) that is 'free'.
If I were a gambling man I'd be betting that state of affairs will last 5 years, then the screws will start to turn.

Re: My older hardware seems to outlast my newer systems

Everything is built to a price. If the price of the unit is to remain competitive - i.e. lower than it was, or not a lot higher, and if component and mfr costs are going up then quality of components will have to go down. My Optiplex 7040 is about 6 years old - I think. It was ex-corporate refurb. M...

Re: CPU temperatures

IS it the same if you take the battery out and just run off the mains connector? If the battery is old and never reaching full charge then it keeps on trying to charge which generates heat .........
