Re: Trackballs

We had a couple of trackball fans where I worked. The only problems came (regularly) when they started to get jumpy due to a build of of crud on the rollers underneath the ball. Basically human skin, grease and dust. Such fun to clean out.....

Re: Ubuntu 24.04 released

This was not exactly unexpected, I've been banging on about exactly this since 2022 when it became obvious that Canonical intends to drag linux into a snap walled garden one way or another. By 26.04 they will have made it impossible to install deb files at all because of changes they have made to &q...

Re: The weather has been crazy

It does seem very strange, the lawn is not waterlogged, the lakes that have formed in fields starting to dry up, soon they'll stop overflowing onto the roads - so they'll be dry. Potholes wil...

Re: German state migrating 30000 workers to Linux

Given that Softmaker is a German company and that Softmaker Office is far less alien (to an MS Office user) than LibreOffice - and is better with MS Office files - I am puzzled that they didn't go down that route. OK there's a cost but it is a well supported product and I reckon a good deal was to b...

Re: When did the UK go metric?

It's not so much a process of conversion as gradual slide. For example our road distances are in miles, but the BBC have decided that for broadcast purposes we use metres/kilometres as well. We buy fuel in litres but still use mpg (miles per gallon) as a measure of fuel efficiency - well lets face i...
