Re: The weather has been crazy
Weather is pretty much just weather, but here in Minnesota the seasons are definitely changing. This morning we have an inch of snow (1.25cm) on the ground and the temp was -12C (10F). My old light weight winter parka was finally dead last spring and I tossed it. I have not yet got another, but will...

Trinity Desktop
Yesterday I had a hankering to see if Trinity had anything new. My first try was with Q4OS. That was a disaster; I could not even get a working install. The installer went fine, but it would just not boot, hangin up with trying to mount the UFI file system. I thought it was me making mistakes during...

Re: Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
I have a decent ability to work with units of distance, volume and weight in metric units. Much of that stems from both units being displayed on commonly used items. My speedometer has kph and mph. Food packaging has both measurement systems displayed. But with weather it is rare to seem both measur...

Re: Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
We had a nice quiet peaceful Thanksgiving, thanks for the wishes. Thanksgiving up here always marks the transition to winter and this morning it is a -10C, although it is dead calm out, it still feels cold. Like it or not it is time to get out the winter coat. I think Canada has a Thanksgiving holid...

FreeBSD 14
FreeBSD 14 was released on the 11/20/23. <https://www.freebsd.org> As with most BSD releases it is so incremental, it is hard to see any changes unless you really dig. FreeBSD does update its repositories every 3 months, so software does routinely get updated, however it still often lags behind the ...

Endeavour OS
Endeavour OS <https://endeavouros.com> released a new installer. Big change in this release is that it now defaults to the Plasma desktop instead of XFCE. It also drops a couple of the community supported DE. From what I read, it is now using ~2GB of RAM on idle, but on idle processor usage is down ...

Re: What hardware are you using?
Wow 96 core. I did not find that specific processor, but the 5995WX with only 64 cores is available for $5400 from BH Photo. I wonder what the use case for such a beast is certainly nothing I do would even get that processor to go beyond idle speeds. I suppose I could just run full throttle bench ma...

Re: What distros have you been testing recently?
For reasons I am not sure I understand KDE has a preference for Snaps over Flatpaks. While many KDE apps do have Flatpaks, they are late in arrival. For the largest range and most recent KDE apps one really does need to either use Neon which creates and uses .deb pretty soon after releases or update...
Re: Handbrake
I did not notice that article, however that addition to HandBrake was mentioned in the release notes. Maybe that added to the speed of the transcode as the hardware I used has a Radeon 5300m graphics card.
Re: Handbrake
I owned BeOS and I still enjoy looking at Haiku. Haiku has taken to using QT for building a lot of their applications, which are just a lot of ported KDE apps. From an application standpoint is is almost like using a KDE derivative at times. I did my first video capture on a 68040 Mac with 8MB using...
